Safer than wood

Bioethanol Fireplace Grates are clean-burning. They don't produce any smoke, soot or flying embers. This makes them safer than wood-burning fireplaces.

No gas or electricity connection

All the fuel is housed within the ethanol burners internal reservoir so you don't have to run pipes or cables through your walls.

Why Bioethanol?

Warm your home, not the planet

Burning bioethanol fuel doesn’t produce any smoke, so you can use an EcoSmart smokeless fireplace grate with or without an operational chimney.

FAQ's

What sizes of EcoSmart Fire grates are available?

EcoSmart Fire offers five bioethanol fireplace grate sizes across two distinct series: the modern Grate Series and the traditional Heritage Grate Series, allowing you to match your fireplace opening precisely.

The Grate Series (modern Fluid Concrete design in graphite) comes in three sizes: Grate 18 (457 mm [18 in] L), Grate 30 (762 mm [30 in] L), and Grate 36 (914 mm [36 in] L). The Heritage Grate Series (traditional mild-steel design with ceramic logs) includes Heritage Grate 25 (631 mm [24.8 in] L) and Heritage Grate 50 (1,239 mm [48.8 in] L).

All grates are designed to fit into existing fireplaces with minimal clearance requirements. Your firebox must be at least 640 mm [25.2 in] tall, with 25 mm [0.98 in] front clearance and 12 mm [0.5 in] rear and side clearances. Each grate connects to a dedicated burner (AB8, XL500, XL700, XL900, or BK5 depending on the size) built into the grate itself.

Choose your size based on your fireplace's width and the aesthetic you prefer. The Grate Series suits contemporary settings, while the Heritage Series with its fire-rated ceramic logs complements traditional fireplaces. Contact EcoSmart Fire to confirm which size matches your specific fireplace dimensions.

Are ethanol fireplace grates safe to use indoors?

Yes, converting to EcoSmart Fire ethanol fireplace grates is a certified, safe solution for indoor use. All models carry UL 1370 (North American), EN 16647 BSI Certified (European), and ACCC Safety Mandate compliance.

Safe indoor operation depends on three design requirements: adequate room size (70–116 m³ [2,472–4,097 ft³] depending on burner), minimum clearances of 600 mm [23.6 in] horizontally from flames to fixed furniture and 2,000 mm [78.7 in] vertically to movable items, and proper ventilation to ensure continuous oxygen circulation.

EcoSmart Fire grates are optimised for e-NRG Bioethanol fuel, which delivers superior flame quality and a clean burn; responsible use includes staying present while the fireplace burns and following the fuel spill protocol: remove ignition sources, ventilate thoroughly, allow the area to dry completely, then clean with water.

When these design and operational requirements are met, ethanol fireplace grates deliver safe, clean-burning indoor ambience.

Can I use any bioethanol fuel brand in an EcoSmart Fire grate?

EcoSmart Fire grates require e-NRG bioethanol as the approved fuel, not any ethanol brand. This isn't a restriction, but a deliberate choice to guarantee performance and safety. e-NRG is specifically formulated for ventless bioethanol fireplaces and has been tested extensively to deliver the longest burn time and cleanest combustion across our grate range.

Using a different fuel brand risks inconsistent flame quality, reduced heat output, and potential burner issues. e-NRG bottles include a flame arrester, the safest available, and the fuel produces no smoke, soot, or ash, only negligible emissions. Our testing has confirmed e-NRG burns more efficiently and cleanly than generic ethanol formulations.

This commitment to fuel validation sets EcoSmart Fire apart.

How much does it cost to run a bioethanol fireplace grate per hour?

Running a bioethanol fireplace grate costs $1.88 to $4.38 (USD) per hour, depending on which EcoSmart Fire model you choose and the flame height you're operating at. The variation exists because grate sizes range from compact 3 kW models that consume 0.5 litres per hour, to larger 6 kW units that burn up to 1.1 litres per hour. This hourly cost assumes standard e-NRG bioethanol at current market rates and accounts for the full consumption range across our grate collection.

Because bioethanol fireplaces have no installation costs, no chimney maintenance, no gas lines, and no regular servicing, the total cost of ownership is significantly lower than traditional wood or gas alternatives. A typical evening burn (4 to 5 hours) costs roughly $7.50 to $20 (USD), with no additional expenses. If you choose a smaller grate model for ambience rather than primary heating, costs drop to the lower end of the range.

What maintenance do bioethanol fireplace grates require?

Bioethanol fireplace grates require minimal maintenance because clean-burning bioethanol produces no carbon residue, soot, or ash accumulation. When you convert a traditional fireplace to a ventless bioethanol grate, you eliminate the annual chimney sweeps and flue inspections entirely, along with most upkeep.

Simple wiping with a damp cloth is all that's typically needed. If your grate has dishwasher-safe components, you can clean them like tableware. Bioethanol sometimes leaves trace residue from denaturing agents, but this is easily managed and won't affect flame quality or appearance.

The durability of EcoSmart Fire grates removes additional maintenance concerns. Grade 304 stainless steel burners resist corrosion naturally, while mild steel surrounds are protected by zinc sealing and high-temperature powder coating, both engineered to withstand years of use without degradation. Occasional wiping addresses environmental dust that may burn during operation, but nothing more is required.

This is one of the genuine advantages of ventless bioethanol: you get a real flame without the labour costs and seasonal downtime traditional fireplaces demand. Your grate will perform reliably with virtually no scheduled maintenance.

Can fireplace grates be used if my chimney is blocked or damaged?

Yes, EcoSmart Fire bioethanol fireplace grates are purpose-built for fireplace conversion and require no chimney, flue, or vent connection. A blocked or damaged chimney has no bearing on their performance: bioethanol combustion produces no smoke, ash, or gases that require external extraction.

That said, a blocked chimney can actively improve your setup. Sealing the opening with a non-combustible, heat-reflective panel such as stainless steel, or closing the damper permanently, eliminates the heat loss that occurs when warm room air escapes up an unused flue. Your grate delivers its full output directly into the living space, rather than losing warmth through dormant infrastructure.

The grate sits on a level floor inside your existing fireplace opening, with no structural work, chimney repairs, or specialist trades needed. Adequate room ventilation is the essential operational requirement, and EcoSmart Fire grates are designed and rated for standard residential use. The conversion itself takes minutes, leaving you with a real flame and genuine warmth without the disruption or cost of chimney remediation.

How long does a full tank of bioethanol last in a fireplace grate?

A bioethanol fireplace conversion grate typically delivers 7 to 13 hours of burn time on a full tank, depending on which size you choose and how you set the flame height. Smaller models hold around 5 litres and burn for 7–11 hours, while larger tanks contain up to 9 litres and can provide 8–13 hours of continuous flame. You can extend burn duration further by running at a lower flame setting; the figures above reflect maximum heat output.

The actual consumption rate ranges from 0.64 to 1.1 litres per hour, which means an evening's ambience (say, a 4-hour dinner party) uses roughly 3–4 litres of fuel. EcoSmart Fire grates use a stabilised burner design (steel wool or baffle inserts) that distributes flame evenly and controls fuel evaporation, keeping burn times predictable.

For reliable performance, use e-NRG Bioethanol fuel, which is formulated specifically for EcoSmart Fire products.

Do ethanol fireplace grates produce heat?

Yes, ethanol fireplace grates are designed for fireplace conversions and produce substantial, measurable heat. With outputs ranging from 3 to 6 kW, they can warm spaces of 35 to 60 square metres [377 to 646 sq ft], depending on the burner configuration.

What sets EcoSmart Fire grates apart: because they're ventless, all combustion heat stays in your room. Traditional fireplaces lose heat up the chimney, a significant efficiency loss. Your bioethanol grate retains that warmth, making it an effective heating solution for converted spaces.
